Never Stop Sending

Vision

The word retire comes from the French word retirer, which means to retreat or withdraw.

In America, retirement is sold as a reward. Served with a heaping side of surrender, a dessert of humble pie smothered in settle-down sauce. The check comes too soon. They gotta turn the table. Thanks for playing. Au revoir, gramps.

Yeah, f#@k that. Pardon my French.

How about you take the rocking chair. We'll take the high wire. Call it rewire-ment.

We’re not saying we've got it all figured out. All we’re saying is we know we're not ready to go gentle into that good night, but what the hell are we going to do instead?

To answer that central question, we’re on a mission to find the people who’ve figured something out. And to learn from them.

Real stories about real people who refuse to retreat. Famous and unknown. Seasoned but still hungry. On motorcycles, surfboards, skis and skateboards. Making art, making music, making trouble. Reinventing when the world expects retreat. Because there's a lot of life left.

North Shore Betty: Can Life be a Playground?

Mountain biking
Betty Birrell

For the first 40+ years of her life, Canada’s Betty Birrell windsurfed, skied, and climbed mountains. Then, at 45, she bought her first mountain bike and became a pioneer of Vancouver’s mountain bike mecca: The North Shore.

It was the last straw for her husband, who couldn’t stand the way she treated the world as “one big fucking playground.” After the divorce, she set off to raise her son on her own. On mountain bikes. There’s no way that’s going to work. The world, after all, is not one big fucking playground. Or is it?

What can North Shore Betty, now 78 and ripping the gnarl with riders who could be her granddaughters, tell us about the power of a childlike fascination with play? And can our host keep up long enough to find out? We’ll find out on Oct. 19th when North Shore Betty introduces him to the North Shore.

Stacy Peralta: Embracing the Inner Kook

Stacy Peralta
Stacy Peralta

At 16, Stacy Peralta was the world's best skateboarder. At 22, he owned the world’s best-selling skateboard company. Virtually inventing the action sports video to promote his skateboard team on VHS, he decided to become a filmmaker. No film school, barely a high school education.

Stacy’s early efforts—Dogtown and Z Boys and Riding Giants— revolutionize documentary filmmaking. For Stacy, that means it’s time to move on.

Now, at age 68, he’s decided to become a fine art painter. No athleticism to carry him through the lack of training and formal education. Nothing but balls.

In surf-culture argot, Stacy is a kook in the art world. But maybe that’s his secret? Could embracing the eternal kook be a great unlock?

KRISHNA Thapa - The Warrior Monk

Krishna Thapa

Born in a remote Himalayan village, Krishna Thapa was raised in the spiritual traditions of his ancestors. At 19, however, he became a soldier, first with the legendary Gurkhas and then with the British SAS, arguably the most formidable special forces unit in the world.

For 20 years he thrived in a kill-or-be-killed environment. Until one day, in his mid-40s, he’d had enough. Leaving the military, he becomes a monk.

It would take him 14 years to forgive himself for things he’d done. Then he was ready to rejoin the larger world and lead expeditions on Everest, K2, and other Himalayan peaks. Focused on helping amputees, veterans with PTSD, and people with disabilities, he finds new purpose.

In February 2027, we will join him in Nepal for the world’s highest ski tour and journey of self-discovery.

EP6

Dick Bass: Seven Summits by Sixty

Mountain climbing
Dick Bass

At age 50, Texas businessman and ski resort owner Dick Bass announces that he’s going to climb the world’s highest mountain on each continent. Never mind that he’d never climbed a single mountain before or the other niggling detail: No one had ever accomplished the Seven Summits feat.

Bass enlists an unlikely ally: Frank Wells, then president of Warner Brothers (later president of Disney), and also a mountain climbing novice. Both men have already achieved extraordinary professional success, but instead of retreating from risk, they choose to become beginners at something potentially lethal.

Both men have since passed, and we will tell the story through Dick’s Seven Summits book, co-written with one of America's great adventure filmmakers and writers, Rick Ridgeway, along with other extensive archival materials.
